Should a non-artist judge an art show?

by Margaret Modjeski in My Opinion,,,,,,

Since I have become an artist I have entered several art shows. I often wonder who judged the show and what were their qualifications. It wasn’t until recently that I heard of a judge who was not an artist judging a show. I was surprised actually shocked to hear this. How could a non-artist judge the following?

“Categories”

1. Technical excellence
2. Originality
3. Creativity
4. Use of color, use of medium
5. Composition
6. Degree of difficulty; attention to detail
7. Thought provoking
8. Quality of presentation
9. Visual appeal
10. Overall artistic expression
11. Due diligence
12. Forethought

(Most of these came from Esrl Senchuk…an artist.)

After I read this article and several more I firmly believe that the judge of an art competition definitely should be an artist. What do you think? Please write to me and let me know. I will share this on my website!
